2009 Update

Our originally scheduled noon luncheon program, featuring General Bud Strom performing Southwest/ Cowboy poetry renditions and a review of a life as a borderline rancher, has been cancelled. Bud Strom submitted to hip replacement surgery on March 4th.

The club has attracted a program of current relevance, one that might be called "Bridging Generations."

  • In an attempt to define the differences between the generations and fully understand how to cope and relate, we have secured Steve Strange who has studied this subject for some time. Steve is retired from IBM, where he was a team leader on the Blue Gene Supercomputer, the fastest computer at that time. With degrees in both aeronautical and mechanical engineering, coupled with a MBA, Strange has researched this topic and will present it to the club at a Saturday noon luncheon on March 21, 2009.

  • As a teaser, here are some quotes from "The Rotarian Magazine," dated September 2008. "While a Baby Boomer may be willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead, a Gen Xer may value balancing life and work above all else." Or, "Older club members might be more likely to donate money to charitable projects, while younger members may prefer hands-on-work, such as building a house for Habitat for Humanity."

This offering is ripe to outline the basics and the know-how to deal with the differences inherent with.....1) The Greatest Generation (1905-1924); 2) The Silent Generation (1925-1943); 3) The Baby Boomers (1944-1963); 4) Gen-Xers (1964-1980); and 5) the Millennial Generation (1982-today.)

See you at the Eldorado Room at LaPerla at 11:30 AM for a happy hour and a buffet luncheon afterwards. Send your check in the amount of $13.50 each to Dorris Bull, 635 S. Park Centre Ave #1121, G.V., AZ 85614 before Tuesday March 17th.

March 21, 2009--Bridging Generations by Steve Strange

April 1, 2009--This begins our new 2009-10 Illini Club year; BUT, although the club has been successful these past 24 years, it will not continue unless new leadership steps up to the plate SOON. Our options are: 1) Continue with new leadership; 2) Disband the club and join the Tucson Illini Club (that could be renamed the "Southern Arizona Illini Club" - their prerogative); and 3) Disband the club and send all records and monies to the University of Illinois Alumni Association for safekeeping until such time as the G.V. Illini Club might be reconstituted.

Finally! Will anyone take the challenge; thereby, assuring we could have a wonderful quarter-century celebration next year?

Go to the Contacts link for names and phone numbers of board members and contact any of them to show an interest or to ask questions.
